How does your artist explore their star persona using star styles and codes of music?

J.Cole- Crooked Smile

Narrative

This music video is dedicated to a 7 year old girl who was accidentally  killed in a police raid, in 2010. The 7 year old Aiayana Stanley-Jones, was in her grandmother's hand sleeping when the police raided in and a police officer shot her. In the music video the audience is with J.Cole and a DEA agent they both go through the same morning routine they brush their teeth, eat breakfast. As J.Cole washes his face we hear the water running which gives the audience a sense of realism, this happens throughout the starting this makes the audience seem like they are with them. He could be saying that about how races are the same it doesn't matter what colour we are we are the same, we go through the same routine. We later on find out that he is a drug dealer, as we find out that he is a drug dealer it is almost a stereotypical view of a young black man, as they are known to be into drugs and drinking. However as they celebrate his little sister's birthday there is a spilt between the happy times with J.Cole having a nice time celebrating , to the DEA who are on the way to J.Cole. They switches the scenes between the DEA and J.Cole to give the audience the idea that they DEA is on their way to him, this therefore makes the audience feel sad as their is a flip between happy and sad. As they sing happy birthday to the little sister, the audio fades out to make the birthday song more in focus, then the actual song which is in the background. As they are singing they show the DEA agent planning which contrasts with the happy and sad memory. During this happy moment it flips back to the DEA agents which is in a dark lighting which could connote that something bad is going to happen, and they are the bad guys. "Later that night" from now to the end is where this links to Aiayana, it the same narrative, the police raids a house at night, as J.Cole gets arrested she comes out of bed and a police shoots her.

As we get to the bit that she gets shot, the audio fades out and gives a dramatic music that goes in the background. This adds furthermore dramatic effects. The camera is behind the girl which is almost like giving the girl's perspective, this makes the audience feel sympathy and feel the emotion almost like they were the one that was going to get shot. Also as the camera looks like is is hand held and not still landscape held like it was before this make it more suspenceful atmosphere is created. Later on in video there is a close up on the leader of the DEA, which then adds in the information to add in more of a dramatic effect. At the end we can tell that he regrets everything due to the fact that his little sister died. He could be saying that everyone makes mistake but don't make a mistake on drugs as at the end he says "AND PLEASE RECONSIDER YOUR WAR ON DRUGS". His motif here is to end the war on drugs and avoid what happened in the music video and in real life (Aiyana), this makes him seem like an inspirational person as he is looking out for his fellow people. The text is quite simple nothing too outgoing about it, this links to how calm the staring of the music video is, it later on gets serious as the text is eaten by the DEA van. The use of slow motion between the little girl and the DEA agent, gives a dramatic effect as we are reaching the climax of this music video.

                                                            Young People

In this trailer there are certain things that are stereotyped about young people, and there also some things that are shown about the stereotypical view of gender. In the trailer you can see that all the young people are using technology therefore linking to the fact that all young people are good at technology, this shown when the people were recording the race with their phones. In this trailer you can see that it shows the stereotypical view of how young women are represented, they are under dressed and attractive. Also the stereotypical view of young men they all seem to be interested in cars, and girls(sex) they are fighting over a girl. All of the men looks stereo-typically strong apart from the 'nerds'. They also use a lot of violence, guns, explosions, physical fighting etc... The people in this trailer do not seem to care much about things, apart from partying, this is a stereotypical view of teenagers who do not seem to care about anything apart from partying.

The Old

Dr Beverly Hofstadter is subverting the stereotypical view of old people. This is because she is smart, not clueless. And she is not slow at all, overall she is subverts how old people are. In this video you can see that she is not good at showing affection to her son, if you watch the show you would know that she does not show any motherly love to her son as she neglects her son for work. You could also link her to how she subverts the gender roles, as she cares about work more than housework etc... she is not the typical mother that we see on TV. It also seems like she has control in her relationships , which makes her different to the other women who does not have control and let the men have power in the relationship. Overall you can see that the producers has presented her as not being the sweet and caring but as the opposite, which adds humor into it.

How The Media Mediates News Events

BREXIT

Source: Google
In Daily News we can tell that it is in the left wing as it is not in favor in Brexit. We can infer this by the shocking face of the Queen, by using the Queen's face in the front cover brings the audiences' attention this is due to the fact that the expression of the Queen is shocked. This shocked impression shows us how shocking the facts at the bottom is. The fact that the Queen's face is used could indicate how she is feeling about the Brexit. The second bullet point in the front page of Daily News, really shocks the reader, I think this because the use of "decade" shows how long it is, which makes the audience be shocked and furious at the fact that if Britain does leave the EU the "currency plummets to 3-decade low".  By using the adjective "foolish" indicates how much this angers the writers as well as some other people in Britain. However this adjective "foolish" contrasts with the adjective "wise", because "wise" is known for it being knowledge and good judgement. Daily News is making fun of this fact, i think they are showing the audience that in their opinion they think they know everything, however they don't so they are being called "foolish".  And the fact that this has taken the whole of the front cover shows how important this is for the audience to know these information. The bold writing draws the audiences' eyes as this attracts them.

In this image from the woman's expression you can tell how she feels about the "Birth of a new Britain". The fact that she is staring straight at the camera you can feel the emotion coming towards the viewer, which makes the viewer feel the  pain that is expressed on her face. Also the fact that it is all blurred out and focused on David Cameron's wife's face shows the importance of her expression, as most people do not want Britain to leave the EU, so her expression is almost on behalf of those who wanted to stay in the EU. However unlike the other magazine cover this image is not filled up by the page. This could connote the importance of the brexit.
