Music video
James Arthur
The fact that this video is in black and white it could connote the sadness of this, linking to the name of the song "say you wont let go", there is a number of close ups which is giving us a close up of the artists' expression which is very sad and grim. Despite the fact that it is in black and white, there is a number light tones in the video, this could suggest how there is some light/ hope in the fact that the person wont let go. There is a narrative to this music video, it shows the growth of a couple, the black and white could also link to sadness as due to the fact that one of them dies and then we have a close up of the old man crying, this close up makes the audience feel sad as we feel like we were with them till one of them died . The light tones could suggest the light from heaven and the purity of this. This could be link with the representation, from Hall due to the fact that there is only white people, and there is a stereotypical view of a life. Since there is a stereotype of only white people there, this could reduce the fact that other races wont watch this, as they might not like the fact that no other races were shown in this.
Analysis of advert with theories
Heinz
Due to the Semotics theory, the sign of this advert is sausage dogs in sausage costume running towards people in heinz costume bottle smiling at the dog running towards them. We think that they are going to eat the dogs due to the mid shots of their facial expression, especially the one with the beard that is pulling his beard like he is thinking. However the mid shot showing this may be a humour tool, due tot he fact that they look quite weird wearing that. As they are showing a long shot and mid shots of the dogs some people think this is cute and cosy, which could suggest that the product is cosy too. And the fact that they have used family dressed in heinz costume could suggest that Heinz is for everyone and family members. However, some people may have an oppositional view of this, due to the fact that they might not like dogs and might find it offensive at the fact that they are dressed in a hot dog costume as this may put them off hot dogs and eating them.

The Conjuring 2
Poster
Due to the dark lighting we can tell that this is a horror movie. At the top of the poster it says "TRUE STORY" which taps into the audiences fear which may add in the hook of them wanting to watch the movie. Another thing that taps into the audiences' fear the fact that they use religion in this, normally in horror movies there some involvement in religion which therefore makes this even more scarier. The use of grey lighting and dull/ dark lighting makes it a hook, there is a contrast with a light tone which attracts the audiences' eyes. At the bottom it says "FROM THE DIRECTOR OF THE CONJURING AND INSIDIOUS" this could be a promise of pleasure, pleasure of getting scared. Since those two movies are well known to be scary, so the fact that it has come from those directors it could suggest that they will be promised to be scared. The main image is the hand with the cross with it, there is other image which is the a little girl, normally little girls frighten the audiences', as they might of seen 'The ring' or the previous 'Conjuring'. The fact that they have made a squeal means that they must of been it had good reviews. The poster also shows some horror, in the right hand corner of the poster you can see that there is a scary figure lurking which interest people into watching this movie, this also gives the jist of what is going to happen in the movie.
Trailer
The two main actors we are introduced are Ed and Lorraine, if you have watched a lot of horror movies then you would know them very well, if not, they are well known for exorcism of ghosts. They are listening to a tape from what a priest gave them, and normally we associate priest to be the one to help, resulting to religion, normally when you are scared you go back to religion. On the tape we hear a deep scary voice, the producers of this trailer is getting the audience ready for the upcoming horror in the trailer and movie. Then the priest says that the" voice is coming from a 11 year old girl". This makes the audience frighten at this fact, as we think she may be possessed. The fact that it is a mid- shot of them in the house could suggest how it is maybe a normal thing for them. We are then shown where this is going to take place, London, compared to the previous scene where they were in the house where it was bright and sunny it then changes to a dull grey tone when they show the audience London. From then on there is a dark humming sound in the background whiles the actor is speaking this adds in the fear for the audience. The audience is shown the 4 children lining up, children are known to be a symbol for sad emotion, we feel sorry for them because they are children, especially since we know something bad is going to happen to them. We get a close up of the little girl screaming in the dark with only one source of light, the scream scares the audience, it was quick and we the agonizing pain in the girl's face. The close up of the tv screen, it breaks up in between which adds in the fear for the audience as we don't know is something is going to pop up, it is almost like teasing the audience. It blacks out everything and has the text in grey tone, it gives the audience a fact about the movie, as they say "documented" this could suggest that this could be a real story, this can link back to the poster above where it says "true story" which is there to frighten us.There is then a mid shot of the girl surrounded by cross, the daunting music creeps up as the cross turns upside down. An upside down cross is not a good sign, it is the sign of the devil, this therefore causes the audiences' fear rise up. As the trailer goes by, there is sudden silent, the audience is suddenly expecting something to pop up as there is a downward view of the little girl looking up at the pitch black space. Due to the fact that the camera angle is at an angle of the little girl it makes the audience feel like we are in the position of the little girl where we feel the fear of the little girl. As the scary person jumps out the pitch black corner we jump due to the sudden rise of the music and of the little girl screaming. We have a zoom in the lady's face as it rains, the rain normally symbolizes unfortunate, this could symbolize the unfortunate events in the future.
The Spy
The Spy
The genre of this trailer is comedy and action . As soon as the trailer starts, the camera zooms into a landscape, this landscape is very nice and clean. As it zooms into the landscape, it intrigues the view into seeing what this is about. Especially since there is a dramatic music in the background, this makes the audience feel intrigue. The audience is introduced to an attractive male in a suit which therefore hooks in the female audience, he then shows some action which makes the audience feel the beat of the trailer. The lighting is quite dark which could connote the seriousness of this situation. The trailer shows a stereotype that all movies have, the bad guy is a Russian person. As the scene of the bomb is shown the dramatic music creeps up more. The confrontation between the villain and the hero is intense, however as soon as the hero is sneezes and he shoots, shows a humor into this. The sudden silence, and the cut out of the dramatic music makes it funny. The mid shots of the actor's face makes the audience furthermore makes it more funny. It then changes the music to a more upbeat music which makes the audience feel the upbeat of the trailer and we automatically know that this is going to be a comedy movie.

How does your artist explore their star persona using star styles and codes of music?
J.Cole- Crooked Smile
Narrative
This music video is dedicated to a 7 year old girl who was accidentally killed in a police raid, in 2010. The 7 year old Aiayana Stanley-Jones, was in her grandmother's hand sleeping when the police raided in and a police officer shot her. In the music video the audience is with J.Cole and a DEA agent they both go through the same morning routine they brush their teeth, eat breakfast. As J.Cole washes his face we hear the water running which gives the audience a sense of realism, this happens throughout the starting this makes the audience seem like they are with them. He could be saying that about how races are the same it doesn't matter what colour we are we are the same, we go through the same routine. We later on find out that he is a drug dealer, as we find out that he is a drug dealer it is almost a stereotypical view of a young black man, as they are known to be into drugs and drinking. However as they celebrate his little sister's birthday there is a spilt between the happy times with J.Cole having a nice time celebrating , to the DEA who are on the way to J.Cole. They switches the scenes between the DEA and J.Cole to give the audience the idea that they DEA is on their way to him, this therefore makes the audience feel sad as their is a flip between happy and sad. As they sing happy birthday to the little sister, the audio fades out to make the birthday song more in focus, then the actual song which is in the background. As they are singing they show the DEA agent planning which contrasts with the happy and sad memory. During this happy moment it flips back to the DEA agents which is in a dark lighting which could connote that something bad is going to happen, and they are the bad guys. "Later that night" from now to the end is where this links to Aiayana, it the same narrative, the police raids a house at night, as J.Cole gets arrested she comes out of bed and a police shoots her.
As we get to the bit that she gets shot, the audio fades out and gives a dramatic music that goes in the background. This adds furthermore dramatic effects. The camera is behind the girl which is almost like giving the girl's perspective, this makes the audience feel sympathy and feel the emotion almost like they were the one that was going to get shot. Also as the camera looks like is is hand held and not still landscape held like it was before this make it more suspenceful atmosphere is created. Later on in video there is a close up on the leader of the DEA, which then adds in the information to add in more of a dramatic effect. At the end we can tell that he regrets everything due to the fact that his little sister died. He could be saying that everyone makes mistake but don't make a mistake on drugs as at the end he says "AND PLEASE RECONSIDER YOUR WAR ON DRUGS". His motif here is to end the war on drugs and avoid what happened in the music video and in real life (Aiyana), this makes him seem like an inspirational person as he is looking out for his fellow people. The text is quite simple nothing too outgoing about it, this links to how calm the staring of the music video is, it later on gets serious as the text is eaten by the DEA van. The use of slow motion between the little girl and the DEA agent, gives a dramatic effect as we are reaching the climax of this music video.

Young People
In this trailer there are certain things that are stereotyped about young people, and there also some things that are shown about the stereotypical view of gender. In the trailer you can see that all the young people are using technology therefore linking to the fact that all young people are good at technology, this shown when the people were recording the race with their phones. In this trailer you can see that it shows the stereotypical view of how young women are represented, they are under dressed and attractive. Also the stereotypical view of young men they all seem to be interested in cars, and girls(sex) they are fighting over a girl. All of the men looks stereo-typically strong apart from the 'nerds'. They also use a lot of violence, guns, explosions, physical fighting etc... The people in this trailer do not seem to care much about things, apart from partying, this is a stereotypical view of teenagers who do not seem to care about anything apart from partying.
The Old
Dr Beverly Hofstadter is subverting the stereotypical view of old people. This is because she is smart, not clueless. And she is not slow at all, overall she is subverts how old people are. In this video you can see that she is not good at showing affection to her son, if you watch the show you would know that she does not show any motherly love to her son as she neglects her son for work. You could also link her to how she subverts the gender roles, as she cares about work more than housework etc... she is not the typical mother that we see on TV. It also seems like she has control in her relationships , which makes her different to the other women who does not have control and let the men have power in the relationship. Overall you can see that the producers has presented her as not being the sweet and caring but as the opposite, which adds humor into it.

Maslow's Hierarchy
What is Maslow's Hierarchy?
Source: Google |
In Abraham Maslow's paper in 1943, he initiated the Maslow's Hierarchy, which is shown in the picture in left. Maslow's Hierarchy shows the "A Theory Of The Human Motivation". At the bottom of the pyramid is the most important thing that you need in your life, and as you go up the pyramid shows what is less important in your life, as suggested by Abraham Maslow.
Here is a video of a deeper explanation on Maslow's Hierarchy.
Adverts showing Maslow's Hierarchy
In this advert it shows belongingness and love and friendship.

Ethnicity- A Moving Image
Master Of None
In 'Master Of None' you can see the difficulties that asian people have. The character 'Dev' gives a statement of how black had their time and got some of the same rights, but now its time for asians to get the same rights as the blacks. In the trailer you would see the stereotypical asians wanted to get played as in part of show as a cab driver. The producer of the show asked Dev to do an Indian accent and if he didn't he wouldn't get the part in the play. This indicates the stereotypical view of asians men, and since Dev refuses shows that he is going out of the stereotypical view of the asians.
Whereas, in the second season of 'Master Of None', it shows more ethnicity for example if you look in the trailer it shows Dev running with a Chinese child, whereas in the first trailer there wasn't much races that was shown.
Yellow face / White washing
Yellow face is when people use make up to make a 'white' person look like an Asian person. Another way yellow face is used is when a non Asian person is played the part of an Asian person. An example of this is "Ghost In The Shell", where Scarlett Johansson who is an American is playing the role of Motoko Kusanagi. You could also call this white washing as a white person is playing a part of an Asian person.
Another example of Yellow face / Whitewashing is shown in the film of 'Breakfast at Tiffany's'. Where the actor Mikey Rooney played the part of a Japanese man Mr. Yunioshi. Although the producer of the film said that he did not intent to cause any racial comment, others believed that the Japanese part should be played by a Japanese person and not an American as this could be seen as offensive and racist. Later on in 2008 Rooney took an interview about, and he said "Looking back, I wish I had never done it... and I would give anything to be able to recast it, but it's there, and onward and upward." he then later on said that he wouldn't have done if he knew about how offensive it was to do this. However, before this he received good comments about his word as Mr, Yunioshi, these comments included "God, you were so funny." In his interview he said that "even Chinese and Asians" went up to him, saying that he was "out of this world".
Ethnicity-Paint Text
This magazine is aimed at Asian women as shown through the title of this magazine 'AsianWomen'. This is particularly aimed Indians as at the bottom there is 'Bollywood style', we can also infer that this is for Indians because Alesha Dixon is wearing Indian traditional clothes. She is also wearing traditional henna on her leg. This maybe focused at young women, as it says 'Make him want you' which could indicate how women in India are only looking for men to get married, this is a stereotypical view of women, in India. Her position that she is in, is kind of intimidating towards other women, I think this because she is looking directly at the camera, this direct address makes the audience think they should look like this. This could also link to the fact that society has put an image in everyone's head that they should look like a certain someone, skinny, and wear a lot of make up and the way the people dress too.

Advertising
Slogans
- Kit Kat -"Have a break, Have a Kit Kat"
- Nike- "Just do it"
- McDonalds- "I'm Loving it"
- Red bull- "`Red Bull gives you wings"
- Maybelline- "Maybe she is born with it maybe its Maybelline"
Shock Tactics
I believe that Barnardo's adverts has the most shocking tactic and as they use brutal imagery to make the audience feel uneasy for example( the advert below)
Another one of Barnardo's advert, is called "Life Story". As the camera is held by a person and it is shown, makes the advert feel very personal to us. This advert slowly goes from bright colours to dull colours which could indicate how his life is now bright and happy and not dull like it was for when he was young. The characters change from who is now to slowly changing down to years, to finally a young boy, who is "scared". The fact that it has started happy and then went to sad, leaves an impression on the viewer which makes them feel sorry for them and makes them want to call to help the children. We all feel sympathy towards little children, so the fact that they have ended the advert with a young child saying "I'm scared", makes the audience feel the emotion of the child due to the facial expression and tone of the child, as well as the music in the background which makes us feel the sorrowfulness of the child.
This advert in my believe is the most shocking advert out of all of the Barnardo's adverts. I think this because the fact that it is repeating and it is going faster and faster , brings up the tempo which therefore makes the audience feel the pressure and tension of this advert. By using brutal imagery this makes the audience feel the emotion like it is pouring out of the advert. The fact that it is repeated makes the audience remember the scenes which makes this advert memorable. Barnardo's leaves a deep impression on the viewer, the fact that the images are repeated again and again, faster and faster, makes this stick in the audiences head. This will most likely make the audience help them and call them.
Save The Children
They have used a classic children's song to make it more touchy and make it appeal to the parents who has children. The narrator also tells a story almost like a bed time story which makes the audience think of what kind of bedtime story this is for it to have "massacare" and "rape" in it. This therefore makes the audience think that they don't want this to happen to their children. From the harsh words and brutal imagery this brings the listener's attention. At the end of the video the another person was talking, this is read in a deep tone which shows the seriousness of the situation. By using the word "please" makes the audience feel the emotion and urgency of saving the children. Also the fact that this is about children makes the audience feel the sympathy. When the narrator says "children fighting adults wars" this makes the audience feel guilty at the fact that children are fighting for something the adults are supposed to do, and the fact that is children we feel more sympathy towards children rather than adults. The audience think the children who hasn't had a good childhood.

TV Campaign
Kendall Jenner Pepsi advert
Pepsi has apologized has said in their statement that it was "missed marked" and they were just trying to show "unity". Also in their statement they have apologized to Kendall Jenner for "putting her in this position". However some people are voicing their opinions by saying that it was her choice to do this advert and she never asked questions about and she is held accountable too.
This advert is criticized because of the message that was shown, to the audience. Some of the message that was received was that protest is like a block party. And we are not sure of what the protest is about. Towards the end it seemed like they were copying a Baton Rouge protester in 2016 called Ieshia Evans who was arrested. The fact that Kendall is white, tall kind of makes it a bit racial. Audiences are angry at the fact that it shows that they are co-opting black lives matter. Also the fact that it is Kendall Jenner giving the message connotes that Pepsi is saying the attractive lives matter. As Kendall Jenner hand the police officer the Pepsi questions the fact that they think that a beverage would resolve matters.

Gender
Advert: "Bull" Matthew Mcconaughey
Trailer- The Inbetweeners
Men in this trailer is seen to be competitive to get girls. They are all in their teenage years, as they are portrayed as nerds they are shown as sexual failures, which makes then obsessed with sexual intercourse. This is the stereotypical view of men, that they are obsessed with sexual intercourse. They are all white, racial discrimination, there isn't as single mixed raced person there. There are stereotypical view of men shown such as drinks and sports. They are coded as stupid, as they don't know how to act around women who they see as fantasy figure. They are also labelled as failed domestic male.

What Women Are Seen As
Women in general are seen to be objects. This is shown in TV adverts, music videos. An example of this is Asda's Christmas advert, and Blurred Lines from Robin Thicke.
Tried to domesticate you---> The stereotypical women who stays in the house and do the housework
But you're an animal----> This contrasts with 'domesticate'
That man is not your mate---> Very possessive
And that's why I'm gon' take you --->This shows that women are easy to take, this also shows that they have no say whether she wants to go with person.
Good girl!
I know you want it---> The repetition shows that he is trying to convince the women that she wants it
I know you want it
I know you want it
You're a good girl!---> In the end the men won
Can't let it get past me---> This shows that he is in control
I hate these blurred lines!---> This could suggest that he is confused, maybe between whether he wants to be like this the stereotypical men or the nice and respecting men.
I know you want it---> There is repetition again this shows that he is still trying to convince the women, maybe to make him not feel guilty of what he is doing.
I know you want it
I know you want it
You the hottest bitch in this place!---> This shows that women are judged only by their looks. By using the word "bitch" shows that women in their eyes are not seen as human but an animal.
Get down---> This sound imperative, like the women has no choice of what she wants to do. In the music video it seemed like Thicke was pushing the woman down. This demonstrated the way women is treated by men.
Get up
Go ahead, get at me---> This almost sounds like a threat like a dare.

Asda's Christmas Advert - 2012
The mother in this advert is doing everything in the house. This shows the stereotypic housewife/ mother who stays in the house, and cooks and cleans. And when you look at the father, the only thing he is used for is physical use another stereotypical view of men. At the start of the advert the father was choosing a tree but the mother said no, this shows that the women always takes in charge of everything, this also connotes the stereotypical view of how most of the decision making comes from the women in the relationship. Going back to the mother, the director only shows one second of her having a break with tea and chocolates. The symbolism of the chocolate is very stereotypical to women as women are said to love chocolates. Along with the music it makes it seem very rushed and stressful, it makes the audience feel the rush. When she takes the break the music calms down, which makes the audience feel the relax-ness that the mother is feeling too. Throughout this advert you only see the mother doing every, and when she sits at the dinner table she doesn't get a proper chair. Also, at the dinner table at the head of the table is the father, this shows how he is dominated. At the end of this advert you see the mother give a an expression that she that she is happy with what she has done, this shows that mothers are selfless.

CASE STUDY- Representation
Lyrics of Meghan Trainor's ' Dear Future Husband'
(Not full lyrics)
Dear future husband
Here's a few things
You'll need to know if you wanna be ---> This shows that she is in control as if you don't have what
she needs then you 'FAIL', this is shown in the music video
Here's a few things
You'll need to know if you wanna be ---> This shows that she is in control as if you don't have what
she needs then you 'FAIL', this is shown in the music video
You got that 9 to 5 --->shows that they both have equal rights but this contradicts with the first stanza. This also contradicts in the music video. She seems to be cleaning the floor so this shows that she is the stereotypical housewife.
But, baby, so do I
So don't be thinking I'll be home and baking apple pies --> This shows that she is not the stereotypical 'housewife', who cooks and cleans. This has a big contrast with what she has said in the starting of the paragraph.
I never learned to cook
But, baby, so do I
So don't be thinking I'll be home and baking apple pies --> This shows that she is not the stereotypical 'housewife', who cooks and cleans. This has a big contrast with what she has said in the starting of the paragraph.
I never learned to cook
Tell me I'm beautiful each and every night --> The word 'beautiful' could connote the stereotypical women as they always care about how they look. The words 'Tell me', they are imperative, this also repeats the message of if you tell me this you will get something in return.
After every fight
Just apologize
And maybe then I'll let you try and rock my body right
Even if I was wrong ---> This shows her power in the relationship.
You know I'm never wrong
Why disagree?
Why, why disagree?
Just apologize
And maybe then I'll let you try and rock my body right
Even if I was wrong ---> This shows her power in the relationship.
You know I'm never wrong
Why disagree?
Why, why disagree?
Open doors for me and you might get some kisses ---> This portrays her power. In other words she is saying that if you this for me you 'might' get something in return, and if you don't then you have 'FAILED'
Buy me a ring --> The stereotypical women is shown.
Buy-buy me a ring, babe
Buy me a ring --> The stereotypical women is shown.
Buy-buy me a ring, babe
If you wanna get that special loving --> The same message is repeated here. If you do this you will get this.
Tell me I'm beautiful each and every night
Future husband, better love me right --> This almost sounds like a threat.
From the clothes Meghan Trainor is wear we can tell that it is set in around the 50s, she adds a little twist to it by wearing leather. At 2:01 in the music video, Meghan Trainor is portraying the stereotypical men , masculinity. In other words she is saying if you cant cook, isn't strong then you 'FAIL'. However this contrasts with who she chooses in the end as this person doesn't look physically strong, but brings in pizza. At 0:50 to 0:53, panning shot was used, which makes the audience go on the journey with Meghan.

ABOUT ME
What I like about this is that I was able to edit this video, by exploring 'imovie'. By using a video i took then connecting it with pictures i took i was able to make my video about me.I got both my video and pictures from my phone , i uploaded it to imovie to edit it to make my video. What i found difficult, was trying to look for a background music as i had to adjust it and overlap it to make it fit the full 58 seconds.I also found it difficult to upload the image on to the blog so i had to use youtube to upload it onto the blog.

REPRESENTATION- GENDER
Women used to not get the same rights as men. They would be seen as weak and unable to do things for themselves. Women were really powerless against men, especially in marriage. when divorced men benefited to the fact that they could keep their ex wife's property.Only then in August 20th 1920, women was finally allowed to vote and have a say in things. Later on in 1940 was the women's rights. Women who joined the army did not get permanent status, however President Truman signed the Women's Armed Services Integration Act in 1948 which meant that women was able to get the same rights on the field as men. Now in the 21st century women is able to get the same rights as men.Women has also acceded to be the mayor or the president of a city. This has shown that women has come from a long way as they did not get equally paid as the men even though they have done the same work.
Here is a video of how women are at disadvantage due to gender inequality.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4viXOGvvu0Y
Girls and boys are now following the stereotypical view of the fact that girls wear pink and boys wear blue. At a young age children are learning the stereotypical of ways of image. The video below shows an experiment someone done on children. They believe that the children will answer in stereotypical ways.
Here is a video of how women are at disadvantage due to gender inequality.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4viXOGvvu0Y
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDec8aN6BU8
From this video we can tell that the children are fed information from the media. That this is how men and women should look like. Women with dresses and men with muscle, the stereotypical way of life. and this shows that the children will grow up this exception of this how you should be.
In another experiment it shows a man wants to see how it is to be a woman. The women he turns out to be the stereotypical women that wears a dress and goes clubbing. And towards the end she is that women take a long time in the toilet but that is just a stereotype.
From these experiments we know how stereotypical view men and women are shown an d how effective it is to the society, especially young children who will grow up and be the stereotypical men and women. We can also tell that everything is due to society and their view of things, children will follow the society's view only to be in society and not be an outsider of society.
